L’origine des bredele ou braedele (Bas-Rhin et Moselle), bredala (Haut-Rhin), bredle (Strasbourg) est particulièrement difficile à établir. Les seuls indices sont les moules utilisés pour leur fabrication, dont le plus ancien date du 14 ème siècle.
Quant à la recette, elle a été mentionnée pour la première fois dans des écrits datant du 16 ème siècle.
Jusque dans les années 50, ces petits sablés ont été utilisés pour décorer les sapins de Noël. À cette époque, seuls les enfants les mangeaient, car leurs ingrédients étaient rares et chers : farine, beurre, sucre…
Il existe des bredele spécifiques, ceux que l’on confectionne à l’approche de Noël : on les appelle les Winàchtsbredele, ou petits gâteaux de Noël. Traditionnellement, la confection des bredele commence fin novembre et se poursuit tout au long de l’Avent.
